Frequent Asked Questions

How should I prepare for my spray tan?
Shave or wax at least 24 hours before the spray tan is applied. On the evening before, exfoliate and moisturise; especially around dry skin areas such as knees, ankles and elbows. Better removal of the layers of dead skin leads to a much smoother, consistent and flawless tan. Avoid moisturising and remove all traces of make-up prior to the spray tan; as this can act as a barrier preventing the absorption of the spray tan, leading to an uneven, patchy or streaky tan. With medium to longer hair or with a more prominent fringe, it’s advisable to use a head-band or hair-clip to enable your beautician complete access to your face and forehead.

What should I wear to my appointment?
Ideally you should wear dark clothing (to avoid seeing any tan that may leach) and loose clothing with open toed shoes or flip flops (to avoid the newly applied tan from rubbing off the skin). To avoid discolouration of finger nails and toe nails, a light coating of nail varnish is advisable.

How long will my tan last?
Whether 8, 9, 12 or 14% DHA strength solution is used, the tan will last approximately 5 to 8 days; although this can be extended with careful pre-tan and post-tan care. Regular application will ensure an all-round consistent tan. 24 hours after the spray tan, moisturise regularly or use a tan extender to help with the longevity of the tan.

How does the tan work?
After you have chosen your strength (%DHA) of your tan, your beauty therapist will apply the solution via an airbrush system. The active ingredient in the tan is Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), an additive that darkens the skin by reacting with the amino acids within the skin. DHA originates from plant sources such as sugar beets and sugar cane and by the fermentation of glycerine. DHA is approved by the US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), who deem it safe for use on the skin.

Will my tan protect me from U.V radiation?
IMPORTANT: No! As common with the majority of spray tan solutions on the market, BrazilianGold contains no sunscreens and therefore offers no protection from the sun’s harmful U.V. radiation. It is imperative that when you expose your skin to the sun, that you continue to use a sun protection product (with an appropriate SPF) in the normal manner.

I have sensitive skin. Can I still receive a spray tan?
In rare cases, some people have displayed an allergy to DHA. It’s therefore advisable that before your very first spray tan, you request your beautician to perform a “patch-test” a few days before your spray tan appointment.

I’m pregnant. Should I have a spray tan?
It’s not recommended that pregnant women in their first trimester (13 weeks) or those breast feeding have a spray tan. This is a general precaution, as the hormonal changes in some pregnant women can make them become more sensitive to the effects of spray tan solution.

How long does the spray tanning process take?
Depending on the size and shape of the person who’s receiving the spray tan and the expertise of the person performing the spray tan; it normally takes between 6 to 8 minutes to perform a full body application. Once the spray tan has been performed, you should allow between 5 to 10 minutes for your spray tan to dry thoroughly.

I’m quite fair; will your tan be suitable for me?
Our tan is suitable for all skin types. Fairer complexions, who struggle to tan well in natural sunlight or by the use of sun beds, will see excellent results.

How soon can I shower after receiving a spray tan?
It’s advisable to refrain from showering for at least 6 to 8 hours (unless using the Express formula, which allows showering after an hour of application). For optimum results, its best to leave showering until as long as is possible, as this enables the tan to develop to its maximum potential. An ideal scenario would be to book your spray tan appointment in the early evening and then shower the next morning. (Don’t forget to avoid wetting the skin by washing up, etc. until the tan has chance to develop). It’s normal for some surface bronzer to wash off during the first shower. Remember to pat dry and avoid rubbing the skin. During the developing period (6 to 8 hours), avoid swimming or exercising to the point of sweating.
